I'm hoping to go rock climbing again soon, so that I can practice these techniques, I'm going to look for more sources on climbing techniques such as more videos or articles since Adam Barczak's videos only contain the basics.

General Techniques
To get an overall look into the techniques of rock climbing, I've watched Adam Barczak's series of videos on rock climbing for beginners. I've seen some of his videos about belaying and equipment, and I think his videos are very clear and helpful. He has good demonstrations and understandable demonstrations. He breaks everything down and focuses on one body part at a time. I really liked the video on the different types of holds. The holds are designed to simulate outdoor climbing holds. When I went climbing, I found that some are easier to get a grip on, but I went for the easier ones where I could basically put my entire hand around it. I didn't know that there was a certain technique to grabbing onto different holds.

I love how unique your project idea is and how passionate you are about it. I learned so much about rock climbing from reading your posts as well as the videos you posted. I also really like all the puns (Physics rocks!) and the memes. You seem to be making a lot of progress, and I cannot wait to see what's coming up next!
ReplyDeleteAudrey!
ReplyDeleteYour project sounds like so much fun! Like you, my project has to do with physical work... which is awesome! I absolutely love how you even looked into the history of rock climbing... it shows your great dedication for this project. I love seeing that you are progressing with this, and I am looking foward to seeing what you can do in December. You're as awesome as this project! YOU GOT THIS GIRL! Good luck :)
This is such a fun project. I applaud you for doing this. A fear of hights stops most people from this kind of endevor. I didn't know that there was a technique to this. Maybe sometime you can branch off from this and learn to climb actual rocks in nature. Keep up the good work and good luck.
ReplyDeleteI've heard so much about your project in person, but I've never read your blog entirely until now. It's impressive just how much time you've dedicated to this project. Your posts themselves look amazing. I love the links, pictures, and videos in each one. It's also exciting to see how much progress you've made. I'm looking forward to seeing you climb and conquer one of those higher difficulty walls in Stone Summit. I know you mentioned maybe trying outdoor climbing one day. I've read a lot about climbing (mostly Mt. Everest books...but still climbing), and it sounds exhilarating. Good luck on everything! I'm excited to see your final presentation. :)
ReplyDeleteMy dad has all these great stories from college about rock climbing with his friends so I've always had an interest in it just from seeing how much he enjoyed the sport. It's incredible that you've put this much research into your project, and I really enjoyed reading about the different grips and ways to climb. The post that talked about fear and making rational decisions while climbing was by far my favorite because there are so many elements to be fearful of when rock climbing. I'm looking forward to your final presentation and seeing how much you've improved over the course of the semester! Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteAudrey, this seems like such a fun project! Your commitment and enthusiasm is really evident in you detailed posts. I really like how you have been improving your physical strength by actually going rock climbing and how you've been doing lots of research. I also know that you've been wanting to go rock climbing for a long time, so I'm glad you finally got to do that. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw that you were doing rock climbing as your 20% time project, I knew I had to read your blog and comment on it. Rock climbing was one of my choices for my project, but I decided to go with yoga! I loved reading about how much fun rock climbing is. I love adventure sports and this fits the category perfectly. I really liked learning about how much work goes into doing this activity. I wish you luck for the rest of the project! Can't wait to read more on your blog!
ReplyDeleteThis project takes a lot of guts, goodness. Meanwhile, I sit at my desk and squint at poetry. That post about fear is really interesting. Are you going rock-climbing with someone else next time or will it be solo? My aunt does a lot of rock-climbing, too, and I used to be interested in it before I realized I'm terrified of heights. You're inspiring me to try someday, though. What I love about your blog is that there are pictures and videos, not just text, so that we can learn with you and the feel of it is vibrant.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool!! I loved that you chose to do something physical for your 20% time. I should have done that. I liked the physics post and video. Who knew?? I really like all the videos on your blog they seem very helpful.
ReplyDeleteRock climbing sounds really cool. I can't imagine ever doing it due to my crippling fear of heights. It must take so much effort to climb up a 60 foot wall. But, it sounds like so much fun and I wish you the best of luck on your project.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I just want to say how awesome it was that you took a picture of the Camp Creek climbing wall and made it the first slide of your presentation on pitch day. The last time I saw that was honestly in fifth grade before we grew up and stuff. But this is a really cool project, and something that I know I could get into, if not for fear of fatigue and injury during the peak of my soccer season. The free climbing aspect sounds like something that would be incredibly rewarding to get good at, and I hope this pursuit pays off for you both physically and emotionally. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHey Audrey! I'm actually really happy for you for choosing rock climbing to be your 20% Time project. I remember back in June, you wanted to go rock climbing with some of our friends so bad that one day, but it decided to rain like hell :( But it's good to see that you finally managed to find the time to get into it. This 20% time project has been the perfect opportunity for you, as well as so many of our other classmates to get to do something they actually really want to do. I hope you keep hitting Stone Summit even after this project is over, and maybe we can go with out friends again like we were supposed to back in June.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting! I think of rock climbing as something people do in movies. I had never actually thought about doing it real life. I hope you have a wonderful experience and get very active because this seems like a pretty hard task. I'm pretty sure since you have already started putting lots of focus on this, it will become more of a long teem thing(not simply 20% time). I hope you have lots of fun and keep us updated with your experiences.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually pretty sad. I tried the rock climbing at bass pro shop, and I failed horribly. I'm pretty sure I was only about five feet off the ground haha. With all that said, I'm sure you're having a lot of fun with this choice. Hope you stay safe!
